Oversize Blazers That Can Double as a Dress or a Coat
By wearing a pantsuit on the campaign trail back in 2016, Hillary Clintonunknowingly started a suiting trend. Sies Marjan, Tibi, and Calvin Klein 205W39NYC all featured suits on the runway. Most recently Lady Gaga opted for an oversize blazer jacket and pants instead of a dress, claiming that it made her feel more empowered. This past summer Blake Lively taught everyone how to wear a suit every damn day.
But if you don’t want to wear a full suit, the specific suit piece that has taken over street style is undoubtedly the oversize blazer. Depending on how big you want it, you can essentially wear it as a coat or as a dress. But since it’s a blazer, it’ll make any outfit look put together, no matter what you throw it on over. It’s also great for wearing on top of oversize sweaters or coats for when it gets too cold to wear on its own.

Cascade Detail Blazer, $139.90, Eloquii
This particular Eloquii blazer jacket is great because of the cascading side ruffle that adds a little something extra. Navy pinstripe is also very in—it’s the pattern that It Girl brand Miaou makes their signature Tommy pant in (which Lady Gaga also wore in A Star Is Born).

Any Western Style Jacket That Makes You Look Vaguely Like a Cowboy
Considering 2018 is basically the Wild, Wild West it’s no wonder so many designers have their take on the modern cowboy. Raf Simons had his slightly eerie cinematic cowboy at Calvin Klein 205W39NYC, whereas Phoebe Philo designed uncomplicated Celine cowboy boots for a woman who’d pair them with dresses. The endlessly talked about Danish brand Ganni solidified Western as a trend by creating the perfect pair of boots every influencer seems to be wearing. One of the CFDA finalists, Batsheva, even has a line of dressesmade for women who look like they’ve spent their whole lives on the prairie.
A Western jacket is an obvious extension of the Western trend, and is light enough to help keep you perfectly warm throughout fall. If you want to go for it, consider fringe. If you aren’t exactly Dolly Parton, opt for some suede Western-inspired alternatives. Either way, we’re definitely pairing ours with this on-sale prairie dress that’s under $50 and a pair of cowboy boots.

A Fleece Coat That’s Practical and Surprisingly In
A couple years ago there was normcore, a trend that had everyone wearing white sneakers, jeans, and T-shirts. It was basic and bland, making everyone look the same. But more than anything, it was practical. With neon clothes, snakeskin boots, and prairie dresses trending, it’s safe to say maximalism is back and it doesn’t know what the word practical means. But there is one trend that’s been creeping up as the obvious successor to normcore, gorpcore. Gorpcore is fleece jackets, puffers, Tevas and anything Patagonia. It’s clothing that’s made to withstand the elements—jackets and coats you’d wear to actually go camping in.
For whatever reason the fashion set has caught on, and now downtown brands like Sandy Liang are designing their own take on the classic Patagonia fleece. Even if the trend has been championed and worn by fashionistas who look like they’ve never been to the great outdoors, a fleece coat works for anywhere.

UO Laura Fleece Zip-Front Jacket, $79, Urban Outfitters
This jacket is basically like your favorite blanket but in coat form. The patterns make it modern, so it doesn’t look like your dad’s favorite fleece. It’s also a great option to keep in your office for when the heating just doesn’t cut it.

Patagonia Synchilla Snap-T Fleece Pullover, $119, Nordstrom

A Corduroy Coat in Any and Every Form
Every fall there will be corduroy. But it seems like there has never been as much corduroy as there has been this fall. Corduroy is back from the 1970s in a big way. Isabel Marant has incredible corduroy trousers that’ll make you consider quitting jeans for good. Gucci has corduroy pieces that cost more than life itself, but they’ll have you reconsidering what the word budget really means. The fabric has texture and color, and it feels nostalgic without looking too old-school. If you’re worried it’s too stiff, there are some corduroy puffers that will give your favorite teddy coat a run for its money.
