Police in South Africa have tried and failed to negotiate with angry neighbours to release a suspected thief.

The thief was caught red-handed and the residents tied his hands together, put a stick under his knees and over his arms so he can’t walk.

And to make sure that he couldn’t escape they put a crankshaft he was trying to steal between his chest and knees.

“He is going to sit here until we get our money,” said witness Gugu Nzimakwe.

“He must give us R6 000 for the goods he has stolen from my husband.”

Bhekani Zulu (42) said he worked past midnight fixing a car.

He said: “At about 1am I heard a noise outside. I grabbed my gun and went to check.”

He said he saw his neighbour’s tenant and another man struggling to get the crankshaft over the fence.

“They ran away when they saw me and I didn’t want to start a fight so I went inside the house,” he said.

“But in the morning I went to the neighbour’s house to get the thief.”

He said community members started gathering outside his yard and decided to teach the suspected thief a lesson he will never forget.

“At times my clients wouldn’t pay me because they had to buy new parts,” said Bhekani.

“Now this man must pay me.” The community poured water on the thief and beat him up with a sjambok until the police arrived.

The cops tried to negotiate with the community but they refused to let the suspected thief go.

“He isn’t going anywhere until he pays,” shouted the people.
