Naomi Osaka, the first Japanese woman to win the US Open, defeated her idol Serena Williams to do so.
The match, however, was one marred by controversy, after Serena was given a point then a game penalty, and she criticized the umpire for doing so.
An emotional Osaka had apologized to the crowd for her win after they kept booing, thinking it was directed at her.
Speaking on NBC’s Today, she discussed the match and how nervous she was playing against her idol.
