Mental health issues remain one of the greatest plagues of societies around the world; not solely because of their nature, but because of how we respond to them.
Despite the rising number of sufferers, autism is one of the most ignored health issues in the country, due to low numbers of early diagnosis and management of the cognitive disorder. Yearly, thousands of children are born with autism and cognitive disorders in Nigeria, and caregivers are either unaware of the problem or they simply do not know how to handle them.
Dr. Loretta Enweremadu Burns, founder/CEO of Advanced Behaviour and Education, ABE international Clinics and Consultancy Limited, USA, who was in the country recently, to open a special needs centre in Nigeria, sat down with Pulse TV in an interview where she gave useful insight into the issue of autism and other behavioural disorders, and how to help sufferers of these disorders become functional members of society.
